TOMOSYNTHESIS
Digital breast tomosynthesis/3D mammogram is a revolutionary new screening tool for breast cancer. Instead of the static traditional 2D mammogram, tomosynthesis is performed with a 4 second sweep of the xray tube which results in multiple thin slices through the breast reducing overlapping structures from obscuring small tumors. At the same time with Hologic’s special technique a standard 2D mammogram is also obtained. The combined exam has been shown to reduce call backs for additional tests from30-50%.
Indications: Tomosynthesis/3Dmammograms can be used for screening almost everyone that would otherwise undergo screening mammography. Exceptions currently would include patient’s with implants as well as very large breasted women. Tomosynthesis can also be used in a diagnostic setting as a supplement to digital mammography

What to do prior to scheduling tomosynthesis?
Discuss any new findings or problems in your breasts with your doctor prior to scheduling your tomosynthesis. In addition, inform your doctor of any previous biopsies, surgeries, hormonal use, and family or personal history of breast cancer.
If your breasts are usually tender during your period, do not schedule your tomosynthesis the week before your period. The best time for a tomosynthesis is one week following your period.
In addition please remember:
Do not wear deodorant, talcum powder or lotion under your arms or on your breasts on the day of the exam. The residue left on your skin by these substances
may interfere with the X-rays. If you are still having menstrual
periods, you may want to have your tomosynthesis done within
two weeks after your menstrual period ends. The procedure
will be more comfortable, especially if your breasts become
tender during this time.
Describe any breast symptoms or problems to the technologist performing the exam.
For your safety, please notify our scheduling department and technologists:
- If you believe you may be pregnant
- If you have breast implants

Equipment and procedure
The equipment appears identical to a standard digital mammogram except that the tube head makes an arc at the time of the exposure. Currently the breast is compressed as is done for standard mammogram. Our technologists have special training in this new test and will work with the patient to make the exam as comfortable as possible. The patient will be instructed to hold their breath during the exam for just a few seconds. A certified technologist will perform tomosynthesis. Our technologists are dedicated to breast imaging and take special care to make the experience as comfortable as possible. You will need to remove any
jewelry that might interfere with the X-ray picture. You will
need to remove your clothes above the waist, and you
will be given a cloth or paper gown for the test. If you are
concerned about an area of your breast, show the technologist
so that the area can be noted. You usually stand during a
tomosynthesis; sometimes you may also be asked to sit or lie
down, depending upon the type of X-ray equipment used. The whole exam takes only 15 minutes.

What happens after the test?
| A radiologist will interpret
your exam. The technologists who administer the test cannot
interpret or discuss what they are viewing while performing
the exam. A report will be sent to your physician’s office to
discuss results.
